Here’s a good question from Paperarms with an even better answer, enjoy:
My wife and I want to do this but after an initial meeting with a solicitor we felt he was trying to take over and do everything ( for a very tidy fee) . Has anyone out there been through this process themselves . Was it reasonable to do ? Help needed .
Answer: It depends on the value of the estate, and whether a will has been made out. If the estate is valued at less than 30,000, it is possible to do the job yourself, provided you get the necessary documents from the Sheriff’s office. If it is more than30,000, you will need a solicitor, as the bank or banks will freeze all assets until, you have the correct paperwork from both the Sheriff’s office and HMRC.
